Iris Kieft

Iris Kieft is a partner of ENVIR Advocaten who advises companies, developers and government bodies on planning and environmental aspects of development projects, consenting and transactions.

Iris has a particular focus on planning and (environmental) consenting in the Dutch energy & infrastructure and real estate sectors. She has worked on numerous electricity infrastructure and renewables development projects on provincial, national and international scales and has supported clients with establishing or relocating their businesses in the Netherlands.

Her practice also includes climate change and sustainable development and Iris has represented clients in arbitration and proceedings before the European Court of Justice on the EU emissions trading scheme.

As an attorney, Iris is creative and committed. She enjoys supporting her clients in successfully navigating complex legal and environmental challenges, both in national and cross-border contexts.

In terms of practice areas, Iris specialises in administrative law, Dutch and EU environmental law, planning and consenting law, and EU and public international law. Iris advises clients on regulatory aspects of their activities, including EHS matters, nature conservation and permitting, and represents them in negotiations with regulatory authorities and, where necessary, in litigation. She also advises on regulatory and environmental aspects of M&A and real estate transactions and arbitrations. Recent projects Iris worked on include the realization of an electricity interconnector, the relocation of a restaurant of an international restaurant chain, and legal proceedings defending a municipal zoning plan.

Prior to joining ENVIR Advocaten in 2018, Iris worked for 9 years in the administrative law department and energy sector group of De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek and 1 year in the Real Estate & Construction department and energy sector group of CMS Netherlands. During her time at De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek, she was seconded to the London and Beijing offices.

Iris is regular annotator for OGR-updates and on the environmental law editorial board of open access legal knowlegde platform OpenRecht. In addition, she is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Academy for European Law (ERA) in Trier and a board member of Stibat, a not-for-profit organization that promotes responsible use of batteries and accumulators and realizes end-of-life solutions including collection, sorting and recycling.
